Uploading your puzzle to a free site on Neocities

Last updated March 2016

Neocities is a site where you can get a free website to post crossword puzzles that you create with EclipseCrossword.  Here's how.

Green Eclipse is not affiliated with Neocities in any way.  Beyond this introduction, we won't be able to help you with using the service, and we aren't responsible for the quality or cost of the service.  Only use web services that you trust.

Creating the web page file

If you haven't already created a web page file from your puzzle, go ahead and do that now.

Creating your site

To get started, you'll need to create a site on Neocities.  You can put any number of crossword puzzle web pages on the same site.

  1. Go to neocities.org.
  2. Pick a name for your website—for example, mycrosswords.neocities.org.  That's where your new home page will be, and it'll show up in the address for each of your puzzles too.
  3. Choose a password for your website, and enter your email address.
  4. Create your site.

Once you've created your site, you can just use the Sign In link in the corner to get back to editing your site: you don't need to create a new site every time!

Uploading the page

After logging into Neocities, you might be asked to upgrade your account to a paid level.  As of writing, this isn't necessary—you can do everything you need for free.  So let's skip ahead.

  1. After logging into Neocities, click on the name of your site in the upper-right corner ("mycrosswords", for example).
  2. Click Edit Site.
  3. You should see a list of all of the pages on your website.  Click Upload to add a new one.
  4. Choose the web page file that you created in the previous section.
The site menu. The upload button.

Viewing the page

That should be all you need to do!  Once the file has been uploaded, you should see it in the list of files in your website.

  1. Click on the name of the page that you uploaded.  That will open it in another tab in your web browser.
  2. Look at the address of your page.  It should look something like this:
    http://mycrosswords.neocities.org/example-puzzle-1.html
  3. Click in the address bar to highlight the address of the page, and copy it with Ctrl+C.
The list of your pages.

Sharing the page

Your page is now on the internet.  You can use Ctrl+V to paste the address to the page wherever you like:

Then, you can create and upload additional web pages using the same steps, if you like.  Once you're ready to move on to the next thing, you can even make a home page that lists all of your puzzles.  There's a lot more you can do with Neocities than we can cover here.
